AKKÖY ENERGY CO. INC.
One of Turkey’s biggest HPP projects in BO Model …
Founded in 1999, Akköy Enerji holds the construction and 49-year operation concessions for the Akköy I (investment cost: USD 97 million) and Akköy II (investment cost: USD 250 million) hydroelectric power plants (HPP), which rank among the most important projects of their kind in Turkey today.
Akköy Enerji also holds a renewable energy license and its contract includes a government guarantee to purchase electricity from the company.
Akköy I
Built on the Harşit river in Gümüşhane’s Kürtün township, the Akköy I Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Project consists of a 54-meter high body of Roller Compacted Concrete (RCC) a 12.5-km energy tunnel and power plant equipped with three 34.5 MW vertical-axis Francis turbines.
When it becomes operational, this plant will generate about 315 million kWh a year, which is close to 0.3% of Turkey’s existing hydroelectric production.
Power generation is scheduled to begin in early 2008. Work is currently in progress on constructing the dam, energy tunnel, and power plant building.
Akköy II
The Akköy II project consists of the Aladereçam regulator and the Gökçebel and Yaşmaklı dams. Electricity will be generated at the Akköy II Hydroelectric Power Plant.
Located on Karaovacık creek, the Aladereçam regulator is five meters high and 24 meters long. Crest elevation is 1,635 m and thalweg elevation is 1,630 m. Water from the regulator is sent into the Gökçebel reservoir through a three-meter diameter tunnel that is 4,900 meters long.
Gökçebel Dam is a 140 m high rock fill dam faced in concrete on the downstream side.
The dam’s reservoir, holds about 102.65 million m3 of water. Water from this dam is fed into the Yaşmaklı reservoir through a four-meter diameter tunnel that is 7,250 meters long.
The Yaşmaklı Dam is a concrete gravity dam 100 meters high (crest elevation: 1,630 m, thalweg elevation: 1,530 m).
The dam can hold 19.66 million m3 of water. A three-meter diameter and 4,525 meters of tunnel sends the water to the surge chamber and from there it goes to the Akköy II power plant via a 3,250 meters long and 2.40 meter diameter of penstock. The energy head of this penstock is 1,200 m.
The Akköy II power plant will be equipped with two Pelton turbines and with two synchronized vertical axis generators. The plant will produce 827.7 million kWh of electricity a year.
This project will be a most important new milestone in terms of Kolin Construction’s engineering and economic strengths. With reasonable unit investment costs thanks to anticipated rises in electricity prices paralleling shortages in supply and with operating costs close to zero, the additional impetus contributed to the Kolin Group of Companies by Akköy I and Akköy II will be significant.
